Build the Brain You Want
This video viewing is one of the first tasks for the 6411 Cognition and Learning course.
By watching this video you will continue to build the brain you want. Practice thinking, struggle through, continue to consider variability in brain structures and functions, and continue to learn how to learn.
Some key points that helped structure my viewing and change my brain:
- what we know about the brain and neuroplasticity is changing at a breathtaking pace
- misconceptions in our thinking about brains and learning – either not true or incomplete
- research shows that ALL our behaviours change our brain, for better or worse
- changes happen in chemistry, structure, and function in the brain
- integrated networks can occur in isolation, but most often it’s in harmony
- primary driver of change in your brain is practice
- increasing difficulty during practice leads to greater structural changes (long term memory)
- required dose of practice is very high, there’s no pill for that
- using brain stimulation, exercise, and robotics to prime the brain for practice
- no ‘one size fits all’ approach – leads to development of personalized medicines, learning
- use of biomarkers to match stroke therapy to individual patients
- study how and what you learn best – repeat those behaviours and habits, break those that are not helping you learn, keep practicing
- you can build the brain you want
To build this neuroplasticity across multiple brains, I’m inviting others to add their insights and comments to this Vialogue conversation about this video.
