Reading and research

Today I’ve been reading and thinking about research methodologies – mostly about how much I don’t know and how much I’ll need to learn. The first article was one from the Journal of Digital Learning in Teacher Education, published by ISTE. This particular article was about using dedicated education technology courses vs infused technology courses in a faculty of education. The research methodologies were of particular interest because of the details and the data collection. The study design is outlined and the instruments used are identified. Both qualitative and quantitative data was collected. Quantitative analyses involved “Cronbach’s coefficient alpha reliabilities were computed” and “multivariate, repeated measures analyses of variance procedures with follow-up analyses of variance (ANOVAs)” were mentioned. Neither are familiar to me. for the quantative data was audio recorded and transcribed and entered into “HyperRESEARCH Qualitative Analysis Tool, coded, and then analyzed using predetermined and emerging codes” as described by Creswell, 2009. Again…. new and unknown to me.

Then I read Alec Couros’ article about Developing Personal Learning Networks for Open and Social Learning. This provided some essential links and resources since it was a personal description of work done on an open course – theoretical frameworks, descriptions, actions, design decisions, and reflections on findings.

As a result of today’s readings, I’ve started a bibliography in a google doc to store and organize research into topics and sections. (Linked to a view-only version)
