Open Learning Design

I’ve been involved in conversations about open learning design with Dr. Verena Roberts and Leo Havemann for some time now. We have had very active and energetic dialogue about what we think we mean when we say ‘open learning design’ and looking for ways to define, describe, and share this conception. It’s been a process of ‘coming to understanding’. Thus, we share our ideas in several ways.

Learning Design Voices

There is now a preprint version of our book chapter:

Roberts, V., Havemann, L., & DeWaard, H. (2022). Open learning designers on the margins. In T. Jaffer, S. Govender & L. Czerniewicz (Eds.), Learning Design Voices. Advance preprint. https://doi.org/10.25375/uct.21355089

Open Education Conference

There is a conference presentation:

Roberts, V., Havemann, L., & DeWaard, H. (2020, Oct 19). Exploring open learning design: Theories and practice. [presesntation]. Open Education 2022 Conference. https://youtu.be/bVehB2sz_Bw

ReThink Learning Design

We have also provided a video provocation for the learning design project work being done by the ReThink Learning Design instigators – M. Harrison, M. Paskevecius, I. De Vries, and T. Morgan. The semi-final (always iterating) version, titled Rethinking the learning design for open education. Designing to blur the boundaries of OERs is a video production with slide notes that are open for remix and revision.

Still talking

This is just the beginning of longer conversations and wider audiences with diverse voices that need to become engaged in this discourse. From the presentation at Open Education, it’s clear that considerations for Indigenous perspectives and decolonizing practices needs to be part of this dialogue. We are just touching the surface on this conception and bringing global voices into these conversations will only help clarify and enrich this topic.
