My Creative PhD

I’m reading the book The Creative PhD (2020) by Tara Brabazon, Tiffany Lyndall-Knight, and Natalie Hills. I purchased the hard copy of this text when I came across this as a result of coming across Tara Brabazon’s web presence. It was this video about how to write a research proposal that caught my attention a few weeks back, when I was deep into putting the finishing edits on my proposal. The whole vlog playlist is one that I will return to for next phase research tips.

How to Write a Research Proposal. Tara Brabazon. June 25, 2021.

This book has some interesting connections to the work I will do in my PhD research. While I recognize that my work will not fall under the description of ‘art’ in the form of painting, music, or drama production, as suggested in the book, there will be creative elements that will inform my research. This will not require an exegisis to support the creative artifact, as it would in the “creative-led research” (Brabazan et al., 2020, p. 10).

“If doctoral candidates use mixed media in their research, then they must ensure that they manage the movement between these platforms technically, theoretically and methodologically. They must ensure that all elements of the submitted doctorate are coordinated into a tight, precise and convincing intellectual bundle that constitutes research.

Brabazon et al., 2020, p. 39
