Search tips

I spent an hour in a library consultation which resulted in a number of resources and articles, along with book chapters and hard copy book requests that will keep me going in my work for the 6511 SDL course.

I was using key terms “digital literacy” or “media literacy” or “information literacy” along with “teacher education” or “preservice teacher” or “faculty of education”. These were done through the Education Library databases rather than the general ‘find all’ databases, as Kim showed me yesterday. This limits the ‘ask and find’ to a more specific and scannable collection of articles. She suggested using alternative terms as recommended when putting search terms into the search boxes, as well as using the dates slider on the left hand side, along with the subject selector to see what types of subjects are linked or interconnect with my search results.

So I was selecting specifically those from EBSCO and PROQUEST yesterday, but Kim suggested moving outward from those once I’ve completed the hunt for relevant works in these two databases.

My search parameters resulting in 41 articles within this EBSCO ERIC search.

This consultation was well worth the time and effort. It will continue to help hone my research and information literacy for the coming literature review and subsequent research.
